Jamil was called to the Bar and became a member of the Law Society of Alberta in 2011 after having received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alberta in 2010. Prior to his legal career, Jamil received his Bachelors of Applied Sciences (B.A.Sc.) in Biomedical Engineering (Eng. Sci.) from the University of Toronto, where he honed his critical thinking and analytical skills. Jamil also has his Master of Laws (L.L.M.) in International Corporate Commercial Law from King’s College London.
Jamil Sawani’s practice focuses on the areas of criminal and quasi-criminal litigation, civil forfeiture proceedings and certain niche civil and corporate litigation matters.
Jamil understands that the legal system is often stacked against the accused and he fights every day to even those odds. Whether it be defending his client’s Charter rights in a federal trafficking and conspiracy trial or making closing arguments to the jury at a murder trial, Jamil puts his skills in the courtroom to work for his clients in order to get results.
With over a decade of trial and litigation experience, Jamil has been sought out by clients across Canada to represent them at their hearings, trials and appeals. He has appeared as counsel and has successfully argued a great number of precedent-setting cases before all levels of court in Alberta, as well as in other provinces.
Jamil is also passionate about giving back to his community and offers pro bono mediation services to couples, families and businesses struggling with conflict. In furtherance of this service, Jamil received his designation as Qualified Mediator (Q.Med) from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Association for Alberta (ADRIA) in 2018.

After being disappointed with some other lawyers, I was referred to Jamil Sawani by a friend, and have to say that was the best decision I have made.
Very courteous, and respectful to any matter at hand. He will make sure to take his time to explain everything clearly so that everyone is on the same page. Other lawyers use legal mumbo jumbo terms and expect you to understand, and would get frustrated if you don’t. however, he made sure to use clear English, and explain again if need be. He was prompt and would return any correspondence in a timely manner. I would highly recommend him to anyone that wants to get their matters resolved professionally and properly.
